Top 10 in 2013

Can you believe it is the last day of 2013??!!  I guess I am officially old because time is going by way too fast now a days.  I’ve spent the whole morning looking over pictures from this year and trying to decide on my top 10 favorite things from this year.  Basically an impossible task.  I’ve been staring at pics for like 2 hours and decided to just choose 10, knowing that there are 50 others I’d like to include, but then what’s the point of a top 10?

So here we go…

In January I did the Disney Marathon.  Definitely a lifetime goal of mine that was achieved early on in 2013.  I can’t wait to find a new fitness goal for 2014!

Image

I turned the big 3-0 and had a deliciously fab citrus party :).  I decided however, that just because I’m 30 doesn’t mean  I necessarily have to grow up.

Image

I had the privilege of running several 5k’s with my little lady. But it was really all those training runs I’ll remember.  The ones where we planned out the future together, created crazy dinner ideas, daydreamed about our favorite Disney snacks, and fantasized about what Valie could grow up to be one day.

Image

Next up, we went on an 8 night Disney cruise and were introduced to Castaway Cay.  It was one of the most perfect days that ever existed.

Image

I also got involved in the Girls on the Run program.  I love love love introducing fitness to young girls!  I really hope our schedule permits us to be involved in this program again in the spring.

Summer time!! My little clan headed to Dis for a bit in July.  We conquered the 4 parks in 1 day challenge!  Check out that post if you enjoy insanity:).  I was just talking to Val though about our favorite moment that trip.  It was actually spent in our hotel room at the Beach Club.  It was pouring rain, we got some yummy food from the poolside place, took it up to the room, and watched the Teen Beach Movie premier.

In September my baby turned 10 in style!  We had a crazy glow/blacklight bash…check it out if your in a party mood!  I’m always saying that I want to “freeze” time.  Hint hint, that’s a clue to 2014’s party theme!

 Image

A little surprise for me in 2013, the Utah Olympic Park Adventure!  I’ve never had so much fun outside of my comfort zone.  I have a feeling we will be returning here in 2014.

Image

One more time to Disney:)!  Last time before the Annual Pass expired.  Can’t beat October at Disney World.  My absolute favorite time of year to go.  And yes, I am totally getting ready for October 2014 already!  I like to plan ahead…way ahead:)

Image

Lastly, I’ve picked a family portrait to represent all the other moments we’ve had in 2013.  All those quiet, non exciting, everyday times that make us who we really are.

Here’s to the last day in 2013!  Hope you all have a fantastic day!! xox

Running Update & Decrease Impact With Incline

Happy Monday Everyone!  I hope your holiday season is going well.  I have been, and will most likely continue to be sporadic with my posting due to the craziness of this time of year.  I do however want to squeeze in an update on my runner’s knee before I get back to the insanity that is my week:).

After I saw the orthopedic doctor, I went to see a physical therapist next.  The PT did a bunch of things to test my flexibility, strength, and to see how my pain level in my knee was doing.  I am on the mend, so the pain is pretty minimal, thank goodness.  He said I have great flexibility and strength, so those are most likely not the root of the injury.  After the initial exam I was placed on a treadmill and told to run how I normally would before the injury.  The PT recorded me running from a couple angles and found a few issues with my form.  #1 I heel strike, #2 I land with a straight leg, and #3 I don’t pick up my feet very well.  Ugh, I knew I should have taken that running class in college.

Form is a big deal for runners and I should know this.  I have never had my form evaluated or even talked to anyone about running form before this PT session!  I’ve been running for 15 years and just didn’t think it was something I needed to do.  Well, if there is any advice I can give to a new runner it would be to get your form right from the beginning.  I’ve been running the same way forever and making the changes now is soooooo hard.  I can’t just go running and not think about it.  I have to really try hard to make my body run with proper form.  But I’m hoping that with enough practice, it will become natural.

Until then…I guess I’ll just be awkward.

Ok, enough of that.  Let’s get onto something useful.  The PT also gave me some helpful info on using an incline to help decrease the stress on your knees.  I never thought of this before!  Running on a 6% incline can decrease the stress on your knees by half, crazy.  Of course you run slower and it’s hard,  but that is a big difference.  This can really help if you have knee pain and need to train longer.  I gave this a try yesterday and could really feel the difference.  I ran about 3.5 miles and was starting to feel just a bit of strain in my left knee. So I popped up my incline to just 3%, lowered my speed a bit, and the strain disappeared.  I was able to finish my run and even go a half mile longer than I anticipated.  Sweet sauce!

This is the chart the PT gave me.  It’s super helpful when using an incline to train.  It shows you your pace equivalent when using an incline.  Obviously you are working harder when you run uphill and this chart does the math for you, I love it.  I taped this next to my treadmill for reference.  You can find this and other info here.

Disney Christmas Trees!

Saturday night we headed over to the Festival of Trees to check out all the amazing creations.  My favorites this year were the uniquely themed Disney trees.  Not that I don’t love a classic Mickey/Minnie or princess tree, but some of the less common characters/movies need a little spotlight as well.

I love how Jack Skellington has become such an iconic character with Disney.  He is so un-Disney and that’s what I think everyone loves about him.  This tree and display are beyond cool.  Almost all the items were handmade!  Whoever bought this tree is insanely lucky.

Image

Ok, how awesome is this!?  The scary librarian from Monsters University!  Oh, and her eyes moved! There are some talented people who contribute to the Festival of Trees.

Image

We visited my little tree :).  I hope the Anderson’s enjoy it!

Image

I just love my Valie girl!  She was all cheerified that evening because we had a hair/make up tutorial that day for the upcoming competition season.

Image

This was one of Val’s favorites just because it was Frozen themed.  I don’t think she’s loved a movie as much as this one since she um…ever.  We’ve been doing all the hairstyles from the movie on her and everything.  I’m not complaining, I love that she loved a princess type movie again.  It’s like reliving the glory days!

Image

Next awesome Disney tree, Nemo!  The display was so big I couldn’t fit it all in.  They build a big black aquarium frame around the tree, so cool.  I just love all the details.

Image

Then there was the Ratatouille tree.  I just love the framed pictures of the characters and the plates with movie quotes.  Everything is just so darn cute.

ImageImage

And here is the tree that Val’s grandma did, very pretty.

Image

Lastly, not a tree, but a little gingerbread house.  I always love the big elaborate gingerbread houses that people make, but this year the little White Rabbit’s house was my favorite.  It looks just like the movie.  I’m pretty sure if I had been there on bid night, this would have been mine:)

Image

I’m definitely in the Christmas mood now.  I better hurry up wrap some presents while it still sounds like a fun task!!

Cheers!!

Re-Post: 2013 Disney Marathon Race Re-cap

Today I am reposting my race recap of the 2013 Disney World Marathon!  The 2014 race is coming up and I’m feeling nostalgic :).   Have a great Monday everyone!!

The day before the marathon I was lucky to have the distraction of Disney so I wasn’t very nervous.  I made sure I drank water all day, made good food choices, only did a half day at the park, and set up all my gear for the next day.  There are a couple things I will do differently in getting ready for my next long race (if there is one, haha).  I will wear a high quality running skirt instead of shorts.  These cute pink shorts are great for runs up to 13 miles.  After that they start sticking and leading to the dreaded chaffage.  Luckily Disney was amazing and had lots of medical tents with all kinds of remedies.  Next, I will not wear my cute pink sports bra with light colors.  Even though it had been washed tons of times it still bled all over my shirt and me, gross!  I also need to figure out a new way to wear my bib number.  It has to be on the front of your body, but I’m a petite girl and it is a challenge finding a location for that big square.  I had it pinned right under my spi belt and it was too close to the bottom of my shirt and kept bugging the crap out of me.  I guess in my dream running world the bibs would just be 2 inches shorter :)

Image

I set 2 alarms just in case.  One alarm went off at 3:00am and the other at 3:05am.  I don’t think I’ve ever been up that early for ummm anything!  Not to mention that this was Eastern time.  Back home in Utah it was 1am!  Good thing I had been in Florida for a few days and had a chance to adjust slightly.  I did manage to get about 4.5 hours of sleep that night.

Getting ready that morning/night was the first time I was really feeling the butterflies.  I got dressed as quickly as possible while trying to choke my breakfast down.  1 banana, 1 mini Cliff bar, 1/2 granola bar, and lots of water did not go down easily at that time of day.  I totally felt like I was forgetting something, but I guess it was just nerves.  So I crept out of the room and headed to the bus stop.

There were tons of people lining up for the buses!  I tried to take a picture but they were too blurry to even make out what it was.  Blurriness will be a trend with this post, sorry.  I’m very bad a running and taking photos at the same time.  Anyway, I was on a bus with about 15 minutes and was off to the starting line.  They drop you off pretty much forever away from where you need to be.  But, that was good.  I was able to walk out my nervousness before the race started.

Here’s the bag check.  I wore a sweat shirt that I could abandon at a water station in case the start was cold.  It was so warm though that I just checked everything and started my trek to the starting line.

Image

These are lines for port-o-potties!  I had never seen so many portable toilets in my life.  They went on for like 3 or 4 blocks!  I decided to wait until all my water had fully run it’s course before getting in a line.  I definitely did not want to wait in those lines more than once.

Image

Also along the way to the starting line I saw this cute lady.  Her line was longer than the potties so I just snapped a pic as I was walking by.

Image

Getting really close to the start now!  Um, are those people opting not to use the port-o-potties?!  Yup they are.  I would see much, much more of that during the race. Eww!

Image

I made it to corral C, woo hoo!  I think I should have stretched before entering my corral.  I could only do stretches within my 1.5 foot area of space.  I did manage to squeeze to the side eventually so I could really stretch my legs.

Image

At 5:30am the wheel chair racers were off.  Then every 7 minutes one of the corrals were sent off onto the course.  With every wave of runners they shot off fireworks!  So fun and signature Disney.

Image

When my corral started moving I was so dang excited!  This is as good of a shot as I could get of the big 20th anniversary banner we crossed under.  Oh I forgot to mention that they also had Joey Fatone from good old NSYNC running the race.  I never saw him, but I heard him talking over the giant speakers right before the race :)

Image

The first few miles were very crowded!  I couldn’t really get on my regular pace because of the people traffic.  I suppose this was a good thing though, it made me save my energy for later in the race when I really needed it.  I so wanted to stop for Captain Jack & Barbosa and this amazing pirate ship!  But there were just so many people and it was so early in the race, I didn’t want to lose 20 minutes waiting.

Image

I did stop for 3 seconds though to snap this pic.  You can see how early in the race it is, I’m not in a flop sweat yet.  Disney had tons of great photo ops like this all along the route.

Image

The first several miles just flew by.  The next thing you knew I was running towards the Magic Kingdom sign.  You can tell from the pic that traffic slowed to a walk in a lot of areas right here because the road narrowed.  Narrowing roads would be a trend for the day.  Disney always announced it on a speaker before you got to a narrow area, sharp turn, down hill part, whatever.  They were so on top of things.

Image

Right before we got into the Magic Kingdom I passed this couple.  Ugh I’ve never seen these guys and it was killing me!  They’re line was loooong.  Jack and Sally you need to come to the MNSSHP.  This can’t be the one and only time I see you in my lifetime!

Image

Cinderella’s Castle!!  I don’t think I will ever be as happy running as I was at this moment.  How amazing to run down Main Street with loads of people cheering you on and see the castle all lit up.  I would run another marathon just to see this sight again…maybe.

Image

Making a right at the castle and heading into my daughters favorite Tomorrow Land.  So cool!

Image

This is a castle shot after I made the MK loop.  They had it roped off for runners to take pictures with the castle up close.  So awesome to see the sun rising on the Magic Kingdom. I had a normal smile pic too, but it wasn’t nearly as fun :)

Image

As we were leaving through a backstage area they had Cinderella and Prince Charming himself, and the parade float!  Love it.  I think sometime in my life I need to run this race again just so I can take pictures at every character stop.

Image

The run from the MK to the race track went by pretty quickly.  Disney had DJ’s, bands, choirs, and entertainment every mile!  I even took a character pic finally.  Genie only had 2 in line.  That is about how long I was willing to wait, I guess I’m not very patient.

Image

Made it to raceway!  This was pretty cool getting to run the track.  They also had all kinds of cars lined up all along the way.

Image

Another shot of the raceway.  Lots of cars and lots of runners.

Image

Ok, out of the race way and onto the road to Animal Kingdom.  On the way I get to see the villains!  Oh I love me some villains.  The villains are my favorite thing at the Disney Halloween party.  They are so entertaining and completely different than the mainstream characters, love it.

Image

AH, half way there!  And I love that they pictured two of my favorite disney movies on this sign.  I couldn’t get enough of Robin Hood when I was a kid.

Haha!  So funny how right after the 13.1 water stop they have the grave diggers from Haunted Mansion.  They were just ominously wandering around, dragging their shovels, and staring at people.  I also have to give a shout out to all the wonderful volunteers!  The water/food/medical stops were so organized and generous.  It was like running royalty.  Whatever you needed, they had, it was great.

Image

I made it to Animal Kingdom and right outside the gate is my family!  Such a pick me up at mile 14!  It was so good to see them and know that I was on the downhill towards the finish line.

Image

The next several miles were boring.  After the Animal Kingdom and getting to see my family, they parade entertainers and fun boards were starting to lose their excitement.  Not to mention I was having to gag down those gu thingys, yuck.  I was so hungry at the first stop where they had bananas I devoured it in like 3 bite.  Then at the gu stop I was starving again and I actually chewed it.  Now that I think about that it grosses me out.  But after the first gu stop I was trying different techniques to get it down.  The best method was 1/3 or the pack at a time chased by water.  The worst method was stuffing the whole thing in my mouth and trying to force it down.  I’m such an idiot.

When we made it to Wide World of Sports I was so excited to see the scenery.  I know lots of people think running the track is boring and the baseball field was anti climatic, but I thought it was cool.  The Angel’s train there!

Image

See those balloons?  That is the 4:45 pace group.  I ran with them until mile 22, then I killed over.  I’m thinking I could have lasted a couple more miles with them, but I made a big mistake the first half of the race.  I was so excited and fluttery that I didn’t take in any sugars until mile 11 or 12!  So my fuel levels just ran dry.

Image

Here is the stadium.  Spectators could cheer from the stands and they had a big announcer and music.

Image

So I leave Wide World of Sports and start seeing Pixar icons!  That means Hollywood Studios is coming up.  By now the sun is fully up and it’s starting to get hot.  Oh man.

Image

Who was waiting at mile 20?  Mickey, Donald, and Goofy of course!  Very fun getting to see these happy faces and know that in about 6 miles I’ll be done.  Oh wait, did I just say 6 miles…that’s forever away!

Image

Running, running, running, slowing, slowing, slowing, ugh.  About mile 22 I see the Tower of Terror!  I take a walking break before going into Hollywood Studios to gear up for all the people I know will be inside the park looking at me.

Image

Right as I’m headed into the park I see Frozone with no line!  And that means I get to rest a minute longer to take a pic :)

Image

Oh I wish Ralph’s line was shorter.  It wasn’t too bad, but I knew if I stopped again I might not get started back up.

Image

Yeah, this is about mile 23, right before the big crowd of cheering people.  I was so tired.  My legs did not want to go anymore.  I was running on fumes.

Image

Oh thank goodness, I can see the exit to the park.  So sad that I was too tired to really appreciate Hollywood Studios.

Image

I took on more pic right at the corner because it is where I was last year when I was inspired to run this race!  I thought I was going to cry.  I’m not sure if it was sentimental or if I was just so tired I was going to cry, probably both :)

Image

The route from Hollywood Studios to Epcot was lovely I wish I had taken some pictures.  It went around the river and past the Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin area.  The only picture I took was passing Japan.  I was trying to keep a walk run pattern for the last of the race and it was hard.  I just kept thinking of how far I had come already and that it wasn’t much further.  But when you’ve already gone 25 miles, that last one felt like forever.

Image

There’s the finish line!!  This isn’t my point of view, it’s Cam’s.  I crossed just a few second later.  Woohoo!  Final time 4 hours 53 minutes and 55 seconds.  Actually 1 minute quicker than my first marathon and I felt a ton better running this one.  Older and wiser was fantastic in this case.

Image

Here’s the finish line from my point of view.  So many people!

Image

Here is one section of spectators.  It was crazy.  Cheering people for at least half a mile.

Image

I got my medal and met my family!  Not before grabbing some ice, water, and snacks :).

Image

The medal was heavy!  A little more than half a pound.  I had to have Val wear it for me so I didn’t fall over.

Image

When I finished I was literally dazed.  I was so happy to have set this goal and accomplished it, but I was also a little sad that the journey was over.  I suppose however, that there are always I new goals to set and achieve.

I can officially check this one off of my 30 before 30 list!

Flex Friday :)

I’ve seen other cute bloggers do Flex Friday posts and thought I’d give it a go.  My model of choice is of course my little lady:)

Who says princesses can’t have nicely toned arms?! 🙂

Image

But apparently I can only take one photo in focus.  Maybe it was because I was holding the dog, trying to give flexing instructions and taking the pics at the same time, haha!

Image

Strong is beautiful!

Have a fantastic Flex Friday!

I’ll see ya on Monday with a bunch of throwback posts from the Disney Marathon.  I can’t believe my Disney marathon anniversary is in a month!  I really wish I was running it again.  Oh well, we’ll just relive some memories next week.  That sounds like a plan:)

A Quick Update on the Runner’s Knee

It’s getting better!!  Monday I ran 2 miles before I felt anything, so exciting.  I walk/ran after that and continued to have very little discomfort.  Yesterday I got a little too excited and did a 7 mile run/walk and felt it a bit more than the day before.  So I’m going to stick to other forms of exercise for the next couple of days and try again.  I’m loving the whole walk/run thing though.  It makes me feel like I can still run, but with less stress to my body.  I guess that’s why so many people swear by the Jeff Galloway method.  I do different intervals almost every time.  Some days I will run 1 minute, walk 1 minute.  Other days I might run 5 minutes, walk 5 minutes.  It just depends on my mood.  The depressing thing is that I know I’m losing my speed.  I was my fastest ever right before my knee decided it didn’t want to cooperate anymore.  And speed is a hard thing!  I know my fellow runners will agree.  Speed takes tons of work and it’s not the most enjoyable kind of running.  So, knowing that I’m going to have to build up my speed again is not something I’m looking forward to.

But until then, here’s what my regime looks like.  In case anyone else out there is plagued with runner’s knee.

  • Walk/run 3 times a week- using incline to burn more calories
  • Concentrating on form and foot strike
  • Strength training 3 times a week- using high effort to burn calories and improve strength
  • Icing after most workouts
  • NSAIDS after running

I’d love to try taking up swimming as well.  However, I’d need someone to teach me how to freestyle swim:).  I’m at the doggie paddle/basically staying afloat level and I know that’s not going to help me do anything, except maybe drown.

So I’ll keep plugging away.  I’ll have another update next week after my first appointment with the physical therapist.  Hopefully he’ll have some good tips that I can pass along!!

Festival of Trees 2013

Yesterday was decorating day for the Festival of Trees.  The Festival is a big event where they auction off all the donated trees to raise money for Primary Children’s Hospital.  This was my third year doing a small tree.  My dad took me to Festival as a kid every year for as long as I can remember.

I let Valerie pick the theme of the tree every year.  This year she is really into pearly stuff and pastels.  So that’s what we did.  And of course I name the tree after her.  Valie Girl 2.

Image

Funny story about these little accessories, the cute pearly tree…I broke it.  Yeah, it’s missing the base.  I actually wrote a note and taped it to the bottom apologizing for the casualty :).  Oooo and how do you like my tree skirt??  Those are my hot glue gun skills right there! 🙂

Image

Ready for it’s close up.Image

These little chandeliers were the first ornaments we found and loved.  We based the tree around them.

Image

And here’s me with my little tree!  Yes, I totally wore that shirt and pearls to coordinate with the tree.  I’m crazy, I know, you don’t have to tell me.

If you are going to the festival you can find my tree on the end cap of aisle B.

Image

I tried not to look at the other trees going up because I’m taking my family this weekend to check everything out.  I’m such a dork.  As if it’s a surprise and I don’t want to spoil it for myself :).

Do you have any fun Christmas traditions??

Thanksgiving Week/Weekend

Oh man, the Monday after a long holiday weekend is always so hard!  I seriously feel like I’m made of lead today.  Time to shake myself out of my Thanksgiving coma and get back to normal!  I think a little caffeine might do the trick:)

I’ve been on blogging hiatus for a bit just because I wanted to make sure I spent my holiday unplugged and with my loved ones.  So today, you get a hodgepodge of pics from my week/weekend.

Ok, this one is from a week ago, but I had to include a tree decorating picture, it’s traditional.  I’m one of those weirdos who decorates before Thanksgiving.  It leaves more time for shopping 🙂

Image

My hubby celebrated his 35th birthday the day before Thanksgiving!  I made him a cake out of his favorite snack, Zingers.  Sadly, since Hostess came back, the frosting on the Zingers is NOT the same!  It’s hard, dry, and not good.  Come one Hostess, get it together.

Image

Birthday sushi was definitely in order.  I had to get in double workouts that day because this place was All-You-Can-Eat, and delicious.

Image

On Thanksgiving I forced took my family out for a some walk/run intervals.  It was such a gorgeous day!

Image

Me and my gal all ready for dinner!  She’s such a stinker.

Image

Val and her Great Grandma.  It’s official, she’s taller than Grandma now :).

Image

That weekend we also had some of my family over for Sukiyaki.  It’s a tradition my Grandma started for Cameron’s birthday.  My Grandma and her sisters are so cute.

Image

Let the cooking games begin!  Grandma always cooks enough for an army.

Image

Lastly, we spent some time in downtown Salt Lake shopping, snacking, and seeing all the beautiful lights.

Image

Valerie loves to see the candy windows at Macy’s.  I’m so glad downtown got a makeover and is such a fun place to be again.

Image

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Oh, and did anyone see Frozen??  What did you think??

We did…loved it 🙂
