Color Me Rad 5k

This past Saturday I was lucky enough to participate in the Color Me Rad 5k as an affiliate!  I was so excited!  I entered Miss Valie and even my awesome sister in laws joined in on the fun with us.  This was my first “color” run so I didn’t really know what to expect.  The website said to wear white and show up for some fun and the is exactly what we did.

Here we are all nice and clean before the race:).  I’m so glad they gave everyone sunglasses!  It kept the color out of the eyes.

The start and finish line were right next to each other which made it super easy for any spectators.  However I didn’t see many spectators.  This is such a family friendly race that I think everyone just does it instead of sitting on the sidelines.  Kids 7 and under get to participate for free!

There are color bomb stations throughout the course.  The color of the arches is the color that you will be splattered with:)Image

The color is just colored cornstarch so if you get it in your mouth, no worries.  Granted, it doesn’t taste fantastic, but it won’t kill ya.

Valerie’s cousins participated in the 5k as well and they all had a fantastic time!  I didn’t hear complaining about the distance, time, effort or anything!  They were just having a ball and getting exercise without even thinking about it.

When we made it to the finish line we were pretty colorful.  But of course they give you a packet of color as you cross the finish line to make and even bigger mess of yourself.

I don’t think there could have been a better way to start off the first official day of SUMMER!!

Selfie Time 🙂

And HAHAHAHA, a random photo bomber! Hey, he’s pretty cute 😉

Um, I would definitely recommend brining old towels or sheets to put in your car when you are done.  Also baby wipes for your hands and soles of your shoes.  I wipes my hands off the best I could, but my steering wheel was still blue by the time we got home.

Sign of a good time…rainbow hair.

ImageI’d highly recommend this race for families, beginning runners, and those who just want to have a good time.  This is not a serious race and it’s not timed, so if you are looking to compete this is not the place.  But if you want to try something new and colorful with a party atmosphere, you’ve found it.  I’ll definitely be entering again next year:)

A Frozen Run

Last week I got a bit distracted and forgot to post about my Frozen run!  Basically I decided to watch Frozen with Val while I ran on the treadmill and wanted to see how far I could run during the movie.  A bit nuts I know, what can I say, I’m crazy like that 🙂

Well, I ran 10 miles from start to finish!

It is way easier to run to the first half of the movie compared to the last half.  All the cute songs are in the beginning!  I wound up walk running a bit the last 20 minutes, but still, a great way to burn off that food truck excursion we had 🙂

Anyone have a favorite movie they like to workout to??

Celebrating Part 2!

My birth week is almost over!  I’m going to have to check back into reality asap before I get out of control.

Oh wait…I am already out of control! 🙂

Come on now, who doesn’t want a tower or ice cream for their birthday?!  Don’t worry, I shared.  You didn’t really think I would order this on my own did you?  You did??  Ah, you know me too well.

In preparation and aftermath of this ice-cream madness, I did get lots of cardio in.  Running, running, running, and chasing munchkins.

And in my world, shopping is definitely cardio!

See, Freddie is worn out.  Or maybe he is just tired of me asking him what he thinks of dress #75 :). He loved it by the way.

Soooooo, does anyone have any fun plans this weekend??  It’s supposed to be lovely here in the SLC and I’m going to try and enjoy it as much as possible.  I will be cooped up in a cheer comp for about a million hours on Saturday, but I have big plans to tour downtown SLC by foot that day whenever possible.  I will also have some fun Spartan training posts for you next week!  Lots of training is going down this weekend!

Question of the Day!!

What is your favorite birthday treat??

Spartan Training Update!

I can not wait for warmer days!!!  Training in the cold, rain, and snow is killing me.  On our last training session it was rain/snowing.  I guess that I should be grateful the snow has melted and that nothing was sticking to the ground.

We took our makeshift sandbags to the track and had at it!  The workout looked like this:

50 jumping jacks

Carry a heavy object .5 miles

10-50 burpees

Carry a heavy object .5 miles

10-50 burpees

Run 1-3 miles

*Repeat 1-3 times!!

Oh my gracious this was hard.  Trying to run with a 20+ pound bag is rough.  My heart was pounding and it was crazy awkward.  I also did the max burpees, 50.  Ugh it was brutal.  The running wasn’t bad.  I did the 3 miles since running is my thang 🙂

My kiddo decided to workout too.  She had a 10 pound weight she carried!  Love that girl.

I was able to complete this workout 2 times through doing the max exercises/miles.  2 miles with the sandbag, 6 miles running, 100 jumping jacks, and 200 burpees!  I was spent.  This kind of training is so much different than training for a distance race.

After being cold and wet and gross, it was sooooo nice to take a hot shower and die on the couch.

I can’t wait for Summer!  Bring on the 100 degree days!

Diagnosis: Runner’s Knee

Hello blogosphere!  Hope your Monday is going well.  Today’s topic is an update on my knee issue.

Friday I went to see an orthopedist about the knee pain I’ve been having for the past few weeks. This was the first time I’ve been to a doctor for any kind of sports related injury and I have to admit, I had a bit of anxiety. It seems ridiculous now, but I thought the doc might tell me I had some weird knee abnormality and should never run again. Or you know…cut off my leg or something:).

Of course that was not the case. After an x-Ray and a thorough exam, the doc came to the conclusion that it was “runners knee”. Basically an inflammation of the soft tissues or tendons around the knee. My X-ray actually showed that my knee caps are slightly tilted outward. Not a huge deal, but could be contributing to the pain in my left knee. Overuse and running form could be factors as we’ll.

So what do I do now? Well, I have an appointment with a physical therapist who is super passionate about running and has lots of experience with runners. Hopefully he can help me with any form issues and recommend some stretches and exercises. The doctor also told me to continue running but at a slower pace. No speed work, avoid downhill, and to keep my mileage in check with my pain level.  Some other things I can do are to ice it after exercise and tape it during exercise.  The down side is that it will most likely take 6 weeks to get better.  But, I can live with that.  Since the plantar fasciitis took a year and a half to go away, I can definitely do 6 weeks.

I don’t have an interesting picture related to runners knee.  But I did find a picture of my first and only race injury!  I tripped on a crack in the pavement and scraped up my elbow.  Totally embarrassing, glad it hasn’t happened again:).

Questions of the day: Have you ever had runners knee?  What did you do to speed the heeling process?  Ever tripped in at a running event??

Glow Run Recap

Hey there guys! Happy Friday to you!!

Last night was the Glow Run that SL Running Co put on.  I love night time running events!  It started at the store, went to Liberty Park, and finished back at the store for a total of 5 miles.  I wish I could have arrived early to participate in the raffle and contests, but alas, I was on kiddie patrol and just barely made it before the running started.

I said I was going to try KTTape on my knee for the race and that’s exactly what I did.  I watched a video for full knee support and this pic is of my artful taping :).  The tape worked really well.  My knee felt supported but not restricted.  I didn’t feel like I had tape on.  The adhesive stayed put through the whole race. Plus, I felt great and had no twinges!

By the way I’m not nakie in this pic!  My biker shorts were just riding up at the moment 🙂

Here I am ready to run.  I went with pink bangs instead of the full wig (couldn’t get it to stay on).  It wasn’t super cold so I only needed one long-sleeved layer over my tech-T.  I think most normal people only need a long sleeved shirt, but I’m a human popsicle and need fleece whenever it goes below 55.

A little closer and you can kind of see my face paint 🙂 Just Run

When we started running I had planned on sticking to a 9:30 min/mile pace, but I felt fine at 8:50 so that’s what I stuck with.  It was such a lovely night.  I wish this weather would stick around.  Of course I know that’s not going to happen, but a girl can dream.

I finished in 44:10, drank a bunch of water, and then headed home.

Glow Run complete!

Have a great weekend everyone! See you on Monday!

Glow Run Outfit!

Tonight is my 5 mile Glow Run!  I’m pretty excited.  I had a hard time deciding exactly what I would need to stay warm but not hot.  So I just packed for all weather conditions and I’ll decide at the race.  Everything I picked is neon, except the pants. If only I had neon running tights, that would have been awesome.

Those tubes, those are glow sticks.  I plan on wearing as many as possible :).

And that pink thing that looks like a hat…it’s a wig!  We’ll see about that one.  Still not sure if I’ll survive 5 miles in a wig with bangs.

Can’t wait for tonight!  I’ll post the recap tomorrow!!

Have you ever run a Glow race?

Running Injuries

I’ve been running less the past couple of weeks because I’m afraid I have an injury….BOOOOO! This time last year it was plantar plantar fasciitis now it’s who knows what.  My left knee has twinges every now and then and I don’t have pain when I run, but I can feel something weird going on.  It’s hard to explain and frustrating!

I made an appointment to see an orthopedic doctor who specializes in sports medicine on the 22nd of this month.  That gives me 2 weeks and 3 days to be ignorant about my knee.  In the mean time I am cutting back on the mileage, keeping up on the strength training, icing, and trying not to freak out.  I’ve never been to a doctor for something like this and I’m afraid he might tell me the dreaded “take time off” phrase!

Have you ever had a running or exercise related injury?  Did you see a doctor? What did you do?

I’m feeling a bit stressed…

This pic has nothing to do with running injuries, but it makes me smile…and drool.

No, no bacon jerky today.  If I’m exercising less that means I need to behave myself and stick to healthy options.  I guess that’s what I’ll focus on, cleaning up the old diet.  Woo (said in a very sarcastic voice with rolled eyes). I kid, it’s a perfect time to prove that abs are made in the kitchen 🙂

Halloween Hangover :)

Happy Friday everyone!  Anyone else have a Halloween hangover?  I am sooooo sore and need caffeine!!  I was running literally and figuratively all day yesterday.  I set my alarm for 5:30am so I could make sure I got those 10 miles in.  I seriously felt like my legs were made of lead those first few miles.  One of the toughest runs I’ve had in a while.  Oh and I had to get my festive nails in the treadmill pic too:)

So after flying around the house like a mad woman all morning, we were finally off to school!  Baby girl was a girly Frankenstein :).   I could just squeeze her to pieces!

These are her cutie nails.  Can you tell I like nails??Image

They had a Halloween concert and a parade.  Then it was off to Val’s class to help with the Halloween party.  Nothing like games, loudness, and pumping the kids full of candy before sending them home 🙂

Time to get ready for Halloween night!

I carved the Jack Skellington, hubby did Sully 🙂

Valerie did Oogie Boogie.  This is the first year she completely cleaned and carved her own pumpkin!  She only needed help poking out some of the hard parts.  My baby is growing up so fast.

Here’s our house, ready for trick or treaters!

We had lots of fun in our neighborhood, hanging out with family, and enjoying Halloween.Image

And of course…the candy must be organized:)

Hope you all had a great holiday!!

Halloween Fun & A Running Challenge!

My last post about MNSSHP didn’t include the traditional candy haul pic.  That is because I thought it deserved a post of it’s own and I’m using it for motivation:).

This is what our candy pile looked like (even after eating way too much of it for a week!).

Val and I weighed it.  Any guesses????

24 pounds!  Yup.  That’s a lot of candy.  I’ve been using it for events and giving it away and trying to avoid it as much as possible, but it’s tough.  I think I am finally over the initial craving and have pretty much ignored it the past few days.  Not completely, but come on, I’m human:).

I’m tossing this cute little pic into the mix just because I was super excited about my eyeliner art.  We went to a Halloween thingy at Red Butte Garden’s and decided it was a bit chilly to wear regular costumes so we all wore wigs and had fun makeup.  I thought Valie looked like a little Harajuku doll.

Alrighty, onto a little running challenge!  Call me crazy but I love to run on holidays.  This Halloween is going to be a little more difficult just because my day is very full.  So I want to put a challenge out here for myself as well as anyone who would like to join in.  I’m setting a goal for Halloween to get up early and run 10 miles!  I haven’t made time for a long run in awhile, so here it is.  My public statement.  Now I have to do it:).

Anyone else want to set a goal for Halloween?  It can be running, swimming, biking, walking, whatever.  The important thing is to just get moving!
