A Frozen Run

Last week I got a bit distracted and forgot to post about my Frozen run!  Basically I decided to watch Frozen with Val while I ran on the treadmill and wanted to see how far I could run during the movie.  A bit nuts I know, what can I say, I’m crazy like that 🙂

Well, I ran 10 miles from start to finish!

It is way easier to run to the first half of the movie compared to the last half.  All the cute songs are in the beginning!  I wound up walk running a bit the last 20 minutes, but still, a great way to burn off that food truck excursion we had 🙂

Anyone have a favorite movie they like to workout to??

Fun Active Weekend!

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fab weekend! I know I did.  My girly has been out of school all week for Spring Break and I have completely enjoyed spending lots of time with her.  The weather has been totally sad though, so we were stuck doing inside activities more than I would have liked.  But on Saturday we decided that despite the wintery conditions we were going to go out and have a blast at the Olympic Park!

Last fall we went and it was so much fun.  You can check out a thorough review of the place and the activities HERE.

Here we are getting all of our gear for the zip line, drop tower, and ropes course!

Image

There goes my chickie!  This does not look like an April background.

Image

The park got a new drop rope on the tower.  It lets you free fall for an extra 10 feet compared to the old rope.  Yeah, I was scared.  Can’t you tell?  Look at my face!  I hesitated before walking off the ledge.  My heart was pounding!

Image

Miss Val on the other hand, no hesitation, she just goes.

Image

Off to the ropes course!

Image

We started off with the lower course.Image

I thought the course was much more challenging in the winter like conditions!

Image

It snowed while we were on the lower course and made the wires, ropes, and everything a bit slick.Image

I love the snow falling in the pics though.

Image

Right after we did the lower course, the weather cleared up with in just a few minutes.  Crazy Utah.  The sun came out and the sky was blue!

This obstacle is the hardest for me.  You have to hold on to the ropes and swing like a monkey to get to the next rope.  Being a shorty does not help either!

Image

Look how high it is!  It takes me a while to get used to the height.  My heart rate was definitely accelerated even when I was standing still 🙂

Image

Ok Ok, that’s enough adrenaline for now :).  Moving on to some exercise that doesn’t give me anxiety.  We spent a night at my hubby’s family cabin and it is the perfect place to train Spartan style!  We ran from the cabin to the main gate and then back.  It is about a 5 mile run roundtrip.  You can kind of see how steep the hills are in this pic.  I could barely run for 20 seconds before having to walk.  But I was way faster this time compared to the past times I’ve done this run, so woohoo!

Image

And look at the deer!

Image

Yeah, my husband is smiling here, but I really think he was plotting revenge against me for this workout :).  After we finished the hills, we also did a Spartan email workout.  Ugh, I was beat.

Image

The rest of the day I spent lounging.  And on a side note… I know what my life would be like if I ever had another baby :).  Isn’t this the cutest?!!  Freddie really liked snuggling under the blanket with my new niece Cate.

Well that is my weekend recap.

Did you get active this weekend??

Is it Spring yet in your neck of the woods??

Spartan Training Update

Still plugging along with the workouts.  I try to get the hubs out once a week for an endurance/strength/mental training session.  I’m starting to think that the mental hurdle of The Beast is going to be the hardest thing.

I’m loving the workouts that come in my email everyday!  I’ve been seeing some Beast workouts lately and have put those on our “to do” list.  The workout I picked for us this week looked something like this…

Run 1 mile
15 burpees
5 pull-ups
50 crunches
15 box jumps
5 pull-ups
50 bodyweight squats
15 burpees
5 rope climbs or 5 x 25′ bear crawl
50 walking lunges
15 box jumps
5 x 25′ bear crawl

x 3

This was a good one!  I added the sandbag to the squats and lunges and did and extra mile of running on my 3rd round.  It was a sweaty good time.

My little chickie loves to workout with us.  Here she is demonstrating how to use soccer goals as pull up bars :).  I could just squeeze her to pieces I love her so much!

Image

Cam’s “sandbag” is filled with cement mix:)

Image

Out of all the exercises we did, I hated the bear crawls the most.  Not because they were hard, but because the grass made my hands raw!  After 30 bear crawls I never wanted to do another one again!

Image

But I lived!  Hooray!  Let’s hope the weather is just as beautiful for our next workout.

Spartan Training Update!

I can not wait for warmer days!!!  Training in the cold, rain, and snow is killing me.  On our last training session it was rain/snowing.  I guess that I should be grateful the snow has melted and that nothing was sticking to the ground.

We took our makeshift sandbags to the track and had at it!  The workout looked like this:

50 jumping jacks

Carry a heavy object .5 miles

10-50 burpees

Carry a heavy object .5 miles

10-50 burpees

Run 1-3 miles

*Repeat 1-3 times!!

Image

Oh my gracious this was hard.  Trying to run with a 20+ pound bag is rough.  My heart was pounding and it was crazy awkward.  I also did the max burpees, 50.  Ugh it was brutal.  The running wasn’t bad.  I did the 3 miles since running is my thang 🙂

My kiddo decided to workout too.  She had a 10 pound weight she carried!  Love that girl.

Image

I was able to complete this workout 2 times through doing the max exercises/miles.  2 miles with the sandbag, 6 miles running, 100 jumping jacks, and 200 burpees!  I was spent.  This kind of training is so much different than training for a distance race.

After being cold and wet and gross, it was sooooo nice to take a hot shower and die on the couch.

I can’t wait for Summer!  Bring on the 100 degree days!

Help! Sore muscles, can’t move!

K, so whoever told me that muscle soreness only last for the first month of training and then it’s minimal is a liar!  Yesterday I was pretty much useless due to very sore hamstrings and booty muscles.  I tried to loosen things up on the treadmill…haha! Ow, ow, ow, I only lasted 4 minutes.  My next approach was then stretching and of course everything in this picture.

Image

Ibuprofen, max freeze, and princess ice packs make everything better.

Today I am on the mend.  Still sore, but I can move.  Let’s just hope that all this pain means progress 🙂

So that is all I have for today since I was so unproductive yesterday!  Gotta go get some work done!  Have a great day everyone!!

Do you have any tips for sore muscles?

Spartan Training in the Snow

It’s right about now that I hate winter and just want spring to get here already!  How am I supposed to to speed workout with the hubs when the track looks like this??!!

Image

I guess speed will have to wait.  For now we’ll just work on endurance and not falling 🙂

Image

Despite the icy conditions, the edges are starting to thaw and dry out.  Val has a nice little spot to lounge in the sun.  For our outdoor workouts, Cameron and I have been working on burpees, lunges, squats, crunches, a little sprinting on the grass, bear crawls, and jumping jacks for the most part.  I decided that every time we do burpees we should try and do 30 since that it the requirement if you can’t complete an obstacle at the Spartan race.  Holy cow, 30 burpees in a row is tough stuff!!  Hopefully I’ll get quicker because right now it takes me ummmmm FOREVER!

Image

Here’s hoping for an early Spring!!

How are your workouts going??  Anyone out there training for race this year??

Look Out Monday, I’m Coming For Ya!

Usually Monday is not my friend.  But yesterday I decided to get prepped for the week so I could take Monday on at full speed.  I slow cooked 2 kinds of chicken, cooked up a bunch of veggies, lentils, and then made up lots of pre portioned meals for the week.

Image

Since I  posted about the giant apple a few weeks ago, I thought I’d add to my giant fruit collection with a pineapple.  Look at that delicious tropical fruit!  Thank you Costco.  Valerie loves pineapple and this baby got sliced and put into the fridge to enjoy all week long, yum.

Image

Now let us take a small intermission for some sparklers, just because…:)

Don’t tell Val I posted pics of her big cheer hair, she was not a fan of this hair do, haha.

Image

To prep for the coming week a little yoga was also required.  I have been super sore since Halloween and thought yoga might help stretch out those tight muscles.

This was our rockin’ Saturday night.  Living room yoga in our PJ’s.  Pray twist anyone?

Image

This would have been the perfect picture if Freddie wasn’t having a good time with his bed right next to us!  Ugh, don’t know what to do with him, and yes, he is neutered.

Image

Despite the fact that my dog is annoying…Val and I had a great time doing yoga together.  We did the P90X DVD.  My girly made it through all 94 minutes!  Plus she showed me up with her flexible little bod.

Ok, I’m not a regular yoga gal.  I do yoga maybe 4-5 times a year.  So anyone who does yoga regularly please tell me…are your feet supposed to sweat??  Because mine do and it’s pretty gross.

Alright, enough annoying dogs and sweaty feet talk!

Let’s go Monday, bring it! 🙂

What are you doing to take on the week???

Halloween Fun & A Running Challenge!

My last post about MNSSHP didn’t include the traditional candy haul pic.  That is because I thought it deserved a post of it’s own and I’m using it for motivation:).

This is what our candy pile looked like (even after eating way too much of it for a week!).

Image

Val and I weighed it.  Any guesses????

Image

24 pounds!  Yup.  That’s a lot of candy.  I’ve been using it for events and giving it away and trying to avoid it as much as possible, but it’s tough.  I think I am finally over the initial craving and have pretty much ignored it the past few days.  Not completely, but come on, I’m human:).

I’m tossing this cute little pic into the mix just because I was super excited about my eyeliner art.  We went to a Halloween thingy at Red Butte Garden’s and decided it was a bit chilly to wear regular costumes so we all wore wigs and had fun makeup.  I thought Valie looked like a little Harajuku doll.

Image

Alrighty, onto a little running challenge!  Call me crazy but I love to run on holidays.  This Halloween is going to be a little more difficult just because my day is very full.  So I want to put a challenge out here for myself as well as anyone who would like to join in.  I’m setting a goal for Halloween to get up early and run 10 miles!  I haven’t made time for a long run in awhile, so here it is.  My public statement.  Now I have to do it:).

Image

Anyone else want to set a goal for Halloween?  It can be running, swimming, biking, walking, whatever.  The important thing is to just get moving!

What’s On Your Workout Playlist?

I don’t know about you, but I love to listen to music while running or working out.  The only problem is…I’m a pop junkie.  Seriously, it’s a problem.  The playlist on our computer may say Valie’s Pop Mix, but come one, it’s totally mine.  Val and I rock out in the kitchen to it all the time when it’s just us girls (and occasionally when dad is home, just to be annoying).  We fill it with, Katy, Gaga, boy bands, disney artists, all the upbeat songs of the minute, and of course Michael Jackson (gotta have the king of pop!) I make myself listen to other genres just to cover up my bubble gum loving ways, but I just can’t help myself.  Hi, I’m Vickie and I’m a pop music addict.

Ah, I feel so much better getting that off my chest 🙂

Here’s a pic of Val making sushi last weekend.  We had good old One Direction playing.  Nothing better than girls night in, making California rolls, and listening to boy bands.

Image

So what are you listening to right now??  What’s your fave running/workout music?

Don’t be shy!  I just confessed my pop addiction!  There’s no judgement here!
